Full Backup and Recovery of Lotus Notes

Lotus Notes is a cross-platform, secure, distributed database and messaging framework and rapid application development environment that includes pre-built applications like email, calendar, etc. Lotus Notes is essentially a document-based, schemaless, loosely structured database with support for rich content and powerful indexing facilities.

Compared to other types of data storage, databases and email clients present the most challenge in terms of backup and recovery due to the fact that they contain great amounts of important data which are often modified.

Lotus Notes contains different types of user data such as email, database, calendar etc. You may need to back up all data of the application or just some of them, for example, email data. Handy Backup allows performing full backup of Lotus Notes or a partial backup selecting only the needed elements of the application such as database or email data or calendar.

When particular items of the Lotus database are modified, the modifications should be captured and replicated in the backup file. It is clear that it would be somewhat unhandy to perform backups of each modified file manually. This is why we added the Lotus Notes feature to our backup application - Handy Backup.

With this feature you don't have to worry about what particular file/files you need to backup. You just specify in the Add Files for Backup window of the Handy Backup that you want to include Lotus Notes in the backup set and the backup of the application data will be done automatically.

Note: Before you can do the backup of Lotus Notes, you need to write the root directory of Lotus Notes in the System's Path environment variable. To do it, complete the following steps.

1. Right-click My Computer
2. Select Properties from the drop-down list
3. In the Properties window, click the Advanced tab
4. Click Environment Variables
5. In the window that launches, find the System Variables box
6. In the System Variables box, select Path and double-click it or click the Edit tab
7. The Edit System Variable dialog will launch
8. In the Edit System Variable dialog, find the field Variable Value
9. Add Lotus Notes directory to the Variable Value field (type a semicolon first and then the directory itself without any spaces)
10. Click OK
